About Walcott
Walcott began as a railroad stop west of Davenport, platted in 1854, and it took its name from William Walcott, a Chicago and Rock Island Railroad director who gave $500 toward a schoolhouse on the condition that the town carry his name. German and Scotch-Irish settlers bought the cheap prairie land in the late 1850s, and the townspeople were quick to organize: Walcott was the first rural Scott County community with its own water system and water tower in 1897, and a volunteer fire company formed the same year. In 1931 the town built the fire station and city hall that still share one building, and Castle Hall, a pharmacy with a doctor's home upstairs, still stands on the main street. Today about 1,550 neighbors share a town that grew up around Interstate 80, where the sprawling Iowa 80 truck stop is billed as the largest in the world, and the community keeps its small-town rhythm with Walcott Day, softball tournaments at Victory and Wescott parks, and a branch of the Scott County Library.
