About Walford

Walford began in 1884 as a railroad stop called Terry, laid out just as the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul line pushed through Benton County. Five years later the post office asked for a new name so mail would stop wandering off to Perry, and the town became Walford. The city still describes itself as a railroad-born town that has grown into a quiet, family-minded place a few minutes from Cedar Rapids and a short drive from Iowa City. Neighbors gather at the city park pavilion, the ball diamonds off 1st Avenue West and the community center on 5th Street North, and kids go to school with the College Community (Prairie) district. Today about 1,400 people call it home, and fiber internet runs through town and the country around it.
