About Walthill
Walthill sits on the rolling hills near the center of the Omaha Reservation, and it began when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy laid a branch line from Sioux City to Fremont in 1905: the postmaster of the nearby Quinton settlement put his little post office and store on wheels and pulled it up to the highest point by the new tracks. The town was named for Walter Hill, son of railroad builder James J. Hill, held its great lot sale on May 22, 1906, and incorporated that December, with Main Street laid off the section line so it could run level across the hills. In 1907 Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, an Omaha woman and the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree, made Walthill her home, and in 1913 she opened a hospital on the hill at the west edge of town, raised entirely from private gifts and open to everyone. That Craftsman building with its long screened porch is now a National Historic Landmark, and after years of community effort it reopened as the restored Picotte Center in June 2025. Today about 680 people, Omaha families and descendants of French, German, Swiss and Swedish settlers alike, share the village, where the Walthill Blujays are building a new school campus and the public library keeps its doors open on Main Street.
