About Wapello
Wapello grew up in the late 1830s on the west bank of the Iowa River and took its name from Wapello, a Meskwaki chief. When the Wisconsin Territory legislature picked Middle Wapello as Louisa County's seat over its neighbors Upper and Lower Wapello, the three settlements eventually joined into one town, and the county's business has been done here ever since. The courts moved from a log building to a small brick one in 1840, then to an 1854 courthouse of stone quarried from the bluffs southwest of town, and in 1928 to the tan-brick Art Deco courthouse on Main Street with stone eagles carved on its front. A few blocks north stands the 1906 Commercial Hotel, now on the National Register, and in 1924 the town dedicated the junior and senior high school and gym that its students still use. Today about 2,100 people call Wapello home, a county seat where US 61 crosses the Iowa River.
