About Wauneta
Wauneta began with a sod house. George Rowley and his wife built it beside Wauneta Falls in 1875, and a post office followed in 1877, which has kept serving the village since 1886. The railroad arrived in 1892 on a Burlington line that ran from near Culbertson to Imperial, and the population climbed to 793 by 1930. For more than 130 years The Wauneta Breeze, first printed in 1887, carried the news of the place. Visitors today find the Wauneta Roller Mills on the National Register, the grain elevators beside the tracks, the Chateau Theatre on Tecumseh Avenue and the Little Grand Canyon just north of town. About 549 neighbors call it home, and the village says it wants to be a place defined by shared values more than by a map line.
