About Wausa
Wausa's story starts in 1882, when Theodore T. Thorson came back from months of scouting the West for ranch country, built a sod house here, started a flock of 115 sheep and became the first postmaster of a place he called Thorson. Swedish families followed him, and by 1885 the settlement had renamed itself Vasa after the Swedish king Gustav Vasa; when the railroad arrived on November 27, 1890, the name became Wausa, a blend of Vasa and USA. Those roots are easy to see: Thabor Lutheran and the Evangelical Covenant Church both date to the early 1890s, a Viking longship sign welcomes drivers on Highway 121, and a Dala horse stands beside the door of the Lincoln Township Library. On the fourth Saturday of every October the town has served its Swedish Smorgasbord for more than 50 years, with potato sausage, ostkaka and lingonberries, and on a summer Saturday night the Pork Chop Barbecue, begun in 1984, fills Gladstone Park. Today about 590 people live in Wausa, and the Wausa Public Schools Vikings keep the Scandinavian theme alive.
