About Webster City
Webster City began as a little settlement called Newcastle on the banks of the Boone River, laid out by Wilson Brewer in the 1850s. When the legislature split old Webster County in 1857, Newcastle took the name Webster City and became the seat of the new Hamilton County, and the railroad line toward Fort Dodge soon ran right through town. Prosperity shows in the buildings people still use every day: the Beaux-Arts Kendall Young Library, opened from a local endowment and crowned inside by a stained-glass dome, and the stone post office on Willson Avenue finished in 1909. At Wilson Brewer Park, families can climb aboard an Illinois Central caboose, peek into pioneer log cabins and sit in a one-room schoolhouse from 1914. Today about 7,800 neighbors share eleven parks, a riverside trail that runs to Briggs Woods, sculpture in West Twin Park and a busy downtown calendar of market nights, trick-or-treating and the Christmas in the City parade.
