About Wellman

Wellman grew up around a railroad depot. In July 1879 farmer Joseph Wellman set aside forty acres for the tracks and for lots near the depot, and the town that bears his name pulled the area's trade south from older river settlements like Wassonville and Dayton, which had suffered flood after flood along the English River. The town incorporated in 1885, and after a fire took the east side of Main Street in 1902 it rebuilt in brick; Main was paved in 1927. Today the downtown still has its brick storefronts, a mural and a street clock, and the city is proud of its North Park bandshell and one of the few sand-green golf courses left in Iowa. Parkside Activities Center, opened in 2010, gives the town a banquet hall, a gym and child care under one roof. Every Fourth of July the town gathers for a kiddie parade, the main parade, a day in North Park and fireworks at dusk. About 1,500 people call Wellman home, and its kids go to school in the Mid-Prairie district.
