About West Burlington

West Burlington grew up right next door to the Mississippi River city of Burlington, near the river's scenic bluffs, and it was already a town of more than 800 people by the 1890 census. A schoolhouse at Wheeler and Ramsey streets went up around 1888, and a Depression-era Public Works project rebuilt the brick school in 1939; the junior-senior high that opened in the late 1960s carries the name of Walter E. Arnold, a teacher and superintendent who served the district for forty years. Burlington Trailways, a bus line born in 1929, made its home here and sent intercity coaches toward Chicago, Omaha and Denver until it ended scheduled service in 2025, and Southeastern Community College runs its main campus on West Agency Road. Families gather at Pat Klein Park, with its lighted walking path and big shelter house, and at Community Park, home of the city pool. Every Fourth of July downtown fills up for a parade, kids' games, bike races, live music on an outdoor stage and fireworks, and the city of about 3,200 still calls itself a vibrant, progressive community.
