About West Liberty
West Liberty began as a cluster of settlers along Wapsinonoc Creek in the Iowa Territory, and when the railroad laid its tracks through in 1855 the settlement picked up and moved about half a mile to sit beside them. The town incorporated on January 1, 1868, took its name from Liberty, Ohio, where many of its first families came from, and grew busy once a second line crossed the first; by 1910 thirty-five passenger trains a day stopped at the 1897 depot, which was restored and reopened as a museum in 2001. Downtown's two-story brick storefronts, on streets paved with brick in 1915, form a National Register district, with a 1910 movie theater and the 1904 Carnegie library a short walk away. Every July the Muscatine County Fair fills the fairgrounds, where fairs have been held since 1871 and the 1915 Exhibition Hall still stands. Today about 3,900 people live here: West Liberty was the first Iowa town with a Hispanic majority, and its schools teach children in both Spanish and English starting in pre-kindergarten.
