About West Point

West Point began in 1857 as New Philadelphia, a townsite picked by three Bruner brothers and William Sexauer on a bend of the Elkhorn River. It was soon renamed for being the westernmost outpost in the valley, and it has been the Cuming County seat since 1858. On Main Street, the 1911 City Auditorium, which the town's Cadet Band helped design and fund, is still a community playhouse and movie theater. Each August the county fair fills the fairgrounds, where the historical society keeps a 1904 railroad depot, a one-room schoolhouse and a big red barn.
