This week in West Union
About West Union
West Union began on a rise its first settlers called Knob Prairie; William Wells laid it out and renamed it after his old hometown of West Union, Ohio, and businesses were already opening around the public square when it was platted in 1850. As the Fayette County seat it had to fight to keep its courthouse, and townspeople chipped in to build one in 1857, rebuilt it after an escaping prisoner burned it in 1872, and replaced it again after a 1922 fire with the stone-faced 1923 courthouse that still anchors the square. When a fire in May 1885 took the wooden storefronts, the town rebuilt in brick, and the Hobson Block and the 1867 First Baptist Church are among the 38 buildings now in its downtown historic district. Daniel Hess patented an early vacuum cleaner here in 1860, and the 1903 Maple View Sanitarium, later the community hospital, is now the Fayette County Historical Center's museum. In 2008 West Union became a Green Pilot community, rebuilding six downtown blocks with porous pavers that let rain soak back into the prairie. Today about 2,500 people live here, with a busy community library on Vine Street, an aquatic center, a rec center, and the North Fayette Valley TigerHawks' high school.
