About Wilber
Wilber was platted in 1873 by C. D. Wilber, who gave the town his name, and five years later it became the seat of Saline County. In 1962 four townspeople started the Nebraska Czechs, and that August the first Czech Festival drew some 20,000 visitors; the state named Wilber the Czech Capital of Nebraska the next year, and in 1987 a presidential proclamation made it the Czech Capital of the USA. The festival still fills the first full weekend of August with parades down 3rd Street, polka bands at the Sokol hall and Hotel Wilber, Czech dancers, and a kolache-eating contest. The rest of the year the Czech Museum on West 3rd Street keeps the pioneers' rooms and shops on three floors, free by appointment, and the Dvoracek Memorial Library greets readers with 'Vitame Vas.'
