About Williamsburg
Williamsburg started in 1856, when Welsh immigrant Richard Williams laid out a town on the Iowa County prairie. For a few decades it could not settle on a name: the post office called it Stellapolis after the postmaster's young daughter, and in the 1870s some deeds said Chester instead. The question was put to rest in 1885, the year after the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad came through and set off a building boom, when the town incorporated as Williamsburg. That boom made local lumberman David Hughes wealthy, and his turreted 1901 Queen Anne house on Penn Street is now on the National Register. Today the town of about 3,300 gathers around its downtown square and the Raiders' schools, and it is home to Kinze Manufacturing and Holden's Foundation Seeds, two names known on farms well beyond Iowa.
