About Wilton
Wilton began in 1849 when Christian Marolf put up a small log house on the prairie, and in 1855 the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad laid its first line through, giving the place its early name, Wilton Junction. The railroad kept its repair and maintenance shops here until the 1880s, and in 1898 it built the single-story brick Romanesque Revival depot that the Wilton Historical Society later rescued and restored. A few steps away is the Wilton Candy Kitchen, in business since 1867 and counted as the oldest continuing shop of its kind in the country; Greek immigrant Gus Nopoulos bought it in 1910, and it still serves homemade ice cream and phosphates beneath a 1915 tin ceiling, with a small museum of town history in the back. From 1894 to 1905 the town was home to the Wilton German English College, whose grounds became City Park, the one residents call the Blue Park. Today about 2,900 people live in this town straddling Muscatine and Cedar counties, three miles south of I-80, and the year fills with Founders Day in August, Trunk or Treat downtown on Halloween, and an old-fashioned Christmas Window Walk that ends with Santa lighting the tree at the depot.
