About Winnebago
Winnebago, called Nįšoc in the Ho-Chunk language, is the home village of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, the Ho-Chunk people, whose ancestral lands lie in central Wisconsin and northern Illinois. After treaties pushed the tribe from Iowa to Minnesota and then onto the dry plains of South Dakota, many families made their way down the Missouri River at night to Nebraska, and in 1865 a reservation was set aside for them on land the neighboring Omaha Nation ceded; a post office opened at Winnebago in 1867. The tribe tells that story at the Angel De Cora Museum and Research Center on Littlepriest Drive, named for a Ho-Chunk woman who became one of the first nationally known Native American artists, where admission is always free. Little Priest Tribal College, named for a Ho-Chunk chief, began teaching classes here in 1996, and the tribe's Ho-Chunk Village has added new homes and a statue garden. Today about 900 people live in the village, and the year is marked by powwows, community meals and walks that bring families together.
