About Winona
Winona sits on the Mississippi River in bluff country, on land once used by the Dakota for yearly gatherings to honor the dead. Settlers laid out the town in the early 1850s, and steamboats, lumber, wheat mills and railroads helped it grow fast. Many Polish and Kashubian families arrived later and built the big church that still rises over town. Today people come for its stained glass, summer Shakespeare, college life and the view of the river from the bluffs.
