About Wisner
Wisner was laid out in 1871, just ahead of the railroad, and named for Samuel P. Wisner, an official of the Sioux City & Pacific line. Cattle and hogs built the town: Wisner calls itself the livestock center of Nebraska, with some 15 feedlots, and cattle-feeding pioneer Louis Dinklage, who got his start here, helped pay for many of the places families still use, including the Dinklage Swimming Pool Park with its Olympic-sized pool and water slides. The Wisner Women's Club started a library in 1903, and since 1952 it has lived in an 1897 bank building on Avenue E that Bruce Emley gave the city in memory of his parents. The City Auditorium has hosted celebrations, stage shows and craft fairs since 1956, and River Park on the Elkhorn fills up for the livestock show, the Lions Club rodeo and the Thunder by the River truck and tractor pull. Trains stopped running through town in 1982, but about 1,240 people still call Wisner home, and the Wisner-Pilger Gators bring the two towns together on game nights.
