About Wood River
Wood River's first store opened in the fall of 1864, when James Jackson hauled his goods by wagon from Omaha to a spot on the river now called Old Wood River, and the little post office there took the river's name at his suggestion. The Union Pacific put a station there in 1866, but in 1874 the railroad platted a new townsite a couple of miles away and moved the depot, and the whole settlement followed: Jackson's store and home were the first buildings in the new town. A flour mill, a newspaper, a grain elevator and the Wood River Bank arrived in the early 1880s, and the village incorporated in October 1882 in the fertile valley between the Wood and Platte rivers. Travelers on U.S. Route 30 still pass the Gloe Brothers Service Station, a 1933 filling station on a triangle of land at the edge of town that now serves as a drive-up bank and is on the National Register. Today about 1,200 people live here, 14 miles from Grand Island, and the Wood River Eagles keep the school calendar full from FFA trips to holiday tournaments.
