About Woodbine
Woodbine's name came from a homesick postmistress: Anna Butler, who with her husband Lorenzo kept a little store and post office on the Boyer River from 1849, remembered the vine that climbed around her door back in England. Mills for lumber, wool and flour grew up along the river, and in 1866 the town was platted as the Chicago and North Western began running trains between Cedar Falls and Council Bluffs. In 1909 the town opened Harrison County's first library, a low Carnegie building with wide eaves and a Lady Liberty statue on its lawn, and in the summer of 1921 crews laid brick down eleven blocks of the Lincoln Highway, which Woodbine still drives on today as Lincoln Way. That shaded brick street, the downtown storefronts and the library are now on the National Register, and the Main Street office works out of a restored 1928 canopy gas station. About 1,600 people live here on the eastern edge of the Loess Hills, with a PreK-12 school, the CREW Center's indoor pool, Rodeo Days each July and Applefest every September since 1988.
