About Woodward
Woodward began when the Milwaukee Road rebuilt its line through the countryside and put a depot here; the first name picked, Colton, was already taken by another Iowa town, so the place became Woodward and was incorporated in August 1883. The volunteer fire department dates from that same year and still answers the call. In 1931 Riley Robbins opened a dance hall beside a man-made lake just outside town, and Lake Robbins Ballroom has kept its original floor and its weekend bands going ever since, even after the lake dried up in the 1936 drought. A tornado cut through the southeast and east parts of town in November 2005, and the town rebuilt. Today about 1,350 people live here, a family-sized town that is home to the Woodward-Granger middle and high school, the library on Main Street, and the Woodward end of the High Trestle Trail, where walkers and cyclists start out for the long bridge over the Des Moines River.
