About Worthington
Worthington began in 1871 as Okabena Station, a water stop on the railroad beside Lake Okabena, a Dakota name for the nesting place of herons. In 1872 an Ohio group called the National Colony settled the town as a temperance village, and it took the name Worthington. Farming and the railroad drove its growth, and it has been a farm town ever since. Today it is the Nobles County seat, known for the lake, a long-running King Turkey Day, and a city band that plays summer Wednesdays.
