About Wymore
Wymore began as a railroad town: Samuel Wymore donated the land, the plat was recorded on May 21, 1881, and the city says two full blocks of businesses went up in just sixteen days. Welsh families were already farming the Blue River country south of town around Bethel Church, built in 1879, and their language, church, school and cemetery earned Wymore the name Welsh Capital of the Great Plains. By the early 1900s the town had eight parks, two swimming pools and a dance pavilion, a Carnegie library that opened in 1919, and blocks of streets paved in the 1920s with locally made brick, many of which are still there. Today the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Centre on 7th Street keeps that story with a museum, an archive and a large Welsh-language library, while baseball fans gather at Arbor State Park, whose ballfield has rare covered bleachers behind home plate. About 1,400 people live here, and every June the town throws Sam Wymore Days for its founder.
