About York
York was platted in 1869 and took its name from the county it would soon anchor as county seat, and today it sits where Interstate 80 crosses U.S. 81. Its library goes back to 1885, when a women's club started a 200-book subscription library in a dentist's office; a 1902 bequest from Lydia Woods built the public library on East 7th Street, and the Kilgore Memorial Library has carried that on since 1986. Each September, Yorkfest fills downtown with a grand parade, a firemen's pancake feed and a street dance, and just south of town Wessels Living History Farm still cooks on a wood stove and farms the way it was done in the 1920s.
