About Austin
Austin grew up along the Cedar River, where a trapper named Austin Nichols built the first log cabin in 1853 and the town took his name. Mills on the river were the first industries, and in 1891 George Hormel opened a small butcher shop that became Hormel Foods. That is why people call it Spam Town USA, and why the Spam Museum sits on Main Street. Today neighbors gather for concerts at the bandshell park, shows at the Paramount Theatre, and walks in the big Hormel Nature Center.
