About Owatonna
Owatonna sits on the Straight River, which gave the town its name; the Dakota name for the river is Wakpa Owothanna. Settlers came in 1853, and by the early 1860s it was a busy town, with Czech families among those who arrived. Louis Sullivan's National Farmers Bank, finished in 1908, is a famous Prairie School building on the main street. Visitors come for the Steele County Free Fair each August, the Village of Yesteryear, and downtown shops.
