Before we dive into the world's most famous sparkling wine, it is worth asking a simple question: Why Champagne? After all, sparkling wine is made on nearly every continent. There are excellent examples from England, California, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, and beyond. Yet for more than three centuries, one region in northeastern France has remained the benchmark against which every other sparkling wine is measured.
