About East Side

Milwaukee's East Side runs north from downtown to Shorewood, between the Milwaukee River and the bluffs above Lake Michigan. By the early 1870s Brady Street was a busy shopping street for Polish immigrants, whose St. Hedwig's Church went up at Brady and Humboldt in 1871, and from the 1880s well-off families built large homes on the lake bluffs around North Point. The city's first waterworks put up the Victorian Gothic North Point Water Tower in 1873 and 1874, close to Lake Park, a bluff-top park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Today the East Side is home to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the 1927 Oriental Theatre movie palace, and the restaurants, old Italian bakery and shops of Brady Street.
