The house rules

How the Square keeps its manners

  • Real names, real neighbors

Everyone here lives in or near Elkhorn and posts under their own name. That alone changes how people talk.

  • Every post is read first

Nothing goes up until the square keeper has read it, usually within the hour. Talk about issues, not people.

  • Official notices only

Safety news comes from police, fire, weather, schools and utilities. No “suspicious person” posts and no crime rumors. Lost and found pets are always welcome.

  • No algorithm, no likes

Newest first, sorted by section. Nothing is engineered to keep you scrolling, and there are no like counts to chase.

  • Free for every household

Neighbors never pay. Local businesses keep the lights on with a quiet line in the Thursday email, never ads in your feed.

Know what’s happening?

Send us the church supper

The bake sale, the 5K, the class at the library, the trunk-or-treat. If it’s happening in Elkhorn, we want it on the calendar. A photo of the flyer works.

Pete reads every tip before it goes on the calendar. We’ll only use your email if we have a question.

“The things that used to be easy in a town, like knowing what’s happening this weekend, borrowing a ladder or finding someone to trust with your furnace, have gotten harder. The Square is here to make them easy again. I read every post before it goes up, keep the calendar current, and answer the email myself.”
Pete, your square keeper

Questions

Good questions, straight answers

Is it really free?
Yes, for every neighbor, forever. Local businesses keep the lights on with one quiet line in the Thursday email. There are no ads in your feed and there never will be.
Who can join?
Anyone who lives in or near Elkhorn and is 18 or older. When the Square opens, neighbors post under their real names. That’s a big part of why it stays friendly.
Why no crime posts?
Because a town square shouldn’t run on fear. Safety news comes straight from official sources: police, fire, weather, schools and utilities. If something is happening right now, call 911. Lost and found pets are always welcome.
How is this different from a Facebook group?
It’s built for Elkhorn and nothing else. Every post is read before it goes up, there’s no algorithm deciding what you see, and the week arrives in one calm email instead of an endless feed.
Who runs it?
Pete is the square keeper. He reads every post, keeps the calendar current and answers the email himself. The Square is part of Social Squares, which builds one square per town, each run by someone local.
When does it open?
This fall. Founding neighbors will hear first, and the first Thursday email goes to them.
What does “founding neighbor” mean?
You were here before the doors opened. Your number is yours for good, and founding neighbors help decide what the Square becomes.
What happens to my information?
We use it to run the Square and send the email you asked for. We never sell it or share it with advertisers, and there are no trackers on this site. The details are in our privacy policy.
