About Fairmont
Fairmont was founded in 1857 as the seat of Martin County and named for the high ground it stands on. A post office opened in 1858, and the town became a city in 1878. It is built along a chain of five lakes, including Lake George and Sisseton Lake, which people use for boating and fishing. Today neighbors come out for the Glows Parade in November, a pond hockey tournament on Sisseton Lake in January and the Martin County Fair in August.
