Scholars' Convocation: Dan Reynolds
Thursday, October 29 · 11 AM–12 PM
Joe Rosenfield '25 Center (JRC 101): 1115 8th Ave · Grinnell, IA 50112
Hosted by Grinnell College
This talk addresses many different arguments, that have been offered in defense of the Humanities as vital to one's education. After surveying historical justifications for the study of human experience, expression, and thought, it addresses the "use value" of the humanities in today's academia, where the destination (a degree, a job, a fellowship, a product) sometimes overshadows the journey of inquiry, and where measurable data take precedent over other forms of evidence-based knowledge.
