About Kennard
Kennard is a small Washington County village in eastern Nebraska, laid out in 1869 by the Sioux City & Pacific Railroad when its line reached the spot, and named for Thomas Kennard, the state's first Secretary of State. It incorporated as a village in 1895. The railroad shaped everything: a depot, two grain elevators and livestock buyers sent freight to Omaha, and the Chicago & North Western still runs busy track through town. Volunteers built a full-size gym in the 1950s that became the community auditorium, and a park with a movable bandstand now fills the old depot grounds. About 380 people live there today.
