About Lake Mills
Lake Mills grew up in the 1850s and 1860s on what was then the shore of Rice Lake, where Joshua Thomas settled first and a gristmill went up beside the old town lake in 1864, giving the place both halves of its name. Many of the families who followed were Scandinavian, the town was platted in 1869, and for the first half of the twentieth century the Cool Spring Canning Company was where much of the town worked. When the cannery closed in 1957, residents set out to build new jobs themselves, and that do-it-together spirit still shows in the Lake Mills Chamber Development Corporation and in the town's 150-plus local businesses. The Women's Club started a lending library in 1922, won it a room in the new Town Hall on Main Street in 1925, and the Lake Mills Public Library moved into its own building on Lake Street in 1966. Families today head for the oak shade of Oakwood Park and its aquatic center, sled down Popcorn Hill in winter, and pack downtown each July for July Jubilee, with a parade, a 5K, street dances and a free community night.
