About Lake Park
Lake Park began in 1882, when the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway ran its line through this stretch of Dickinson County, and the town was incorporated a decade later, in 1892. It grew up as a farm and railroad town just a few miles from the Iowa Great Lakes, and its motto still invites people to spend a vacation or a lifetime here. A new State Theatre opened its doors on New Year's Day 1931, giving the town a Main Street evening out. Over the years the community weathered a 1942 tornado, then built a water treatment plant in 1970 and its own ambulance service in 1980. In the early 2000s voters backed a new school on the south side, and the plan grew into a community center, a shared school and public library and ball fields that opened to the public in 2003. Today about 1,167 neighbors call it home, with Trappers Bay State Park just to the west.
