About Mead
Homesteaders were already farming this corner of Saunders County by 1867, and when the railroad reached it ten years later the post office opened inside the depot under the name Saunders, while the plat was filed as Alvin. Swedish families did much of the early building, and on August 4, 1880, after the Union Pacific took over the line, the village took the name Mead, probably for one of the railroad's officials. In its busiest years Mead had general stores, a hotel, a bank, garages, a newspaper and even small factories, all serving the farms on the rich ground around it. A volunteer fire department has answered calls here since 1928, and today the water tower still stands over the bank and post office. About 620 people call Mead home, gathering at the library, the school and the churches, and every December the village closes Vine Street for its Hometown Holidays.
