About Norwalk
Norwalk began in the 1840s as a scatter of farm families along the North River, and its first settlement went by the name Pyra until George W. Swan platted the town, built a hotel and renamed it after Norwalk, Connecticut, where he was born. A narrow-gauge railroad reached town in 1882, later widened by the Burlington line, and for decades it carried local livestock to market until a 1947 flood took out the North River bridge. When Norwalk incorporated in 1900 it covered a single square mile; it has since grown, annexation by annexation, around Lake Colchester, the Lakewood and Echo Valley neighborhoods and three golf courses. A red Burlington Route caboose rests in the city park, and a painted mural in the old city center shows a farm wagon, a windmill and the railroad that built the town. Today about 12,800 people live here, many of them young families, with the Norwalk Easter Public Library, the McAninch Sports Complex and the Warren County Freedom Rock all close to home.
