About St. Ansgar
St. Ansgar began in 1853 when Norwegian immigrant farmers, guided by the minister Claus Clausen, settled where the Cedar River, Deer Creek and Turtle Creek meet, and named the place for a ninth-century missionary to Scandinavia. Their stone church, dedicated in 1868, was built with local materials and sturdy enough to double as a fort in anxious times; it is still one of the oldest continuously used Lutheran churches west of the Mississippi and has been on the National Register since 1975. A bequest from Karen Nissen in 1925 started the town library, which was rebuilt in 1930 after a fire and now shares its building with city offices. Today about 1,100 people call it home, with a Friday-night school, a community chamber, a Wednesday farmers market in Clausen Park in summer, and Town and Country Days each June.
