About Asbury
Asbury began in the 1830s as a farm settlement of Methodists, who named it for Francis Asbury, the first Methodist bishop in America; by 1846 they had raised a small log church. For generations it stayed tiny: farmers came to Michael Wernimont's place to have horses shod and plowshares sharpened while they picked up groceries next door, and in 1920 the brick St. Philomena's church rose for its Catholic families. The town incorporated in 1933, yet as late as 1960 it counted just 71 residents, until Dubuque's west side grew out to meet it and, by 1970, Asbury was the fastest-growing city in Iowa. The 1901 schoolhouse that later served as City Hall now pours coffee, and the old Methodist church has become a day spa. Today nearly 6,000 neighbors share four parks, a growing trail network and the Althaus Wetland & Nature Preserve, under a city motto that says it simply: You're Home.
