About Dickeyville
Dickeyville takes its name from Charles Dickey, who opened a general store here in the early 1840s and became its first postmaster in 1849. The village is best known for the Dickeyville Grotto, a garden of shrines beside Holy Ghost Church that Father Mathias Wernerus built in the 1920s from concrete covered in stones, shells, colored glass, gems and geodes, many of them given by people of the parish. The state historical society calls it the most famous work of outdoor folk art in Wisconsin, and tens of thousands of visitors come to see it each year. Today the village sits about halfway between Platteville and Dubuque, Iowa, and many people who live here work in those larger towns.
