About Hazel Green
Hazel Green began in 1825 as a lead-mining settlement and took its name from the hazelnut bushes that grew thick around it; the village says it was the first permanent settlement in Wisconsin. Just south of town in 1831, Lucius Lyon began the survey that became the Point of Beginning, the spot every Wisconsin property deed is still measured from. In 1891 the town built its hall on Main Street with an opera house inside, where people held town meetings, graduations and shows. Today Hazel Green is a farm-country village near Galena and Dubuque, with summer music and fireworks at Tunes & Booms in the Rec Park, a street dance for the Veterans Memorial Park every June, and a Christmas Walk in December.
