About Decorah
Decorah grew up in the bluffs of the Upper Iowa River, on ground where Ho-Chunk families had camped in the 1840s; when the Day family arrived from Virginia in 1849, the new settlement took the name of the Ho-Chunk leader Waukon Decorah. Spring-fed streams like Dunning's Spring turned mill wheels through the 1850s and 1860s, William Painter's stone mill went up in 1851, and that same year the town became the seat of Winneshiek County. Norwegian immigrants poured in, Luther College settled here in 1862, and a museum born on its campus grew into Vesterheim, now the country's largest museum devoted to a single immigrant group. Folks still climb to the copper-domed courthouse on the hill, walk Water Street's brick storefronts past Vesterheim's ornate old hotel, and hike out to the waterfall at Dunning's Spring. Each July Nordic Fest fills downtown with dancing, music and Norwegian food, and the rest of the year Luther's choirs and bands keep this town of about 7,600 singing.
