About Spring Grove
Spring Grove calls itself the first Norwegian settlement in Minnesota, and it took its name from a spring and a grove of trees near the first town site. A post office opened here in 1855, the same year the first school district was set up, and the first schoolhouse went up two years later. In 1893 the Spring Grove House hotel opened on Main Street; today that wood-frame building, later called the Ballard House, is the Giants of the Earth Heritage Center, with murals by a Norwegian painter. Families still gather for a children's parade on Syttende Mai each May and for Juletrefest and a community-built Gingerbread Lane each December.
