About Grant
Farmers from the East Coast settled Grant in the 1850s, and the township was first called Greenfield before it was renamed in 1864 for Ulysses S. Grant. Back then it also covered the land that is now Mahtomedi, Willernie, Birchwood and Dellwood. Its first school opened in 1856, and today's City Hall is one of the old one-room school buildings. Grant stayed farmland for about a century, and now many small hobby farms raise, train and board horses. Neighbors voted to become a city in 1996, mainly to keep the countryside rural.
