About White Bear Lake
White Bear Lake is named for the big lake it sits on, one of the largest in the Twin Cities area. The railroad reached the lake in 1868, and by the 1880s wealthy families from St. Paul were building summer cottages along the shore. The village became a city in 1921. Today people sail and fish the lake, skate and ice fish on it in winter, and walk downtown for shops, plays at the Lakeshore Players and Thursday Marketfest in summer.
