About Luverne
Luverne is the county seat of Rock County, in the far southwest corner of Minnesota along the Rock River. The post office opened in 1868 and the town was platted in 1870, named for Luverne Hawes, a settler's daughter. Locals built homes and a theater from Sioux quartzite and brick, and the Palace Theatre still shows movies on weekends. People now visit Blue Mounds State Park to see a quartzite cliff and a herd of bison, or catch a film at the Verne Drive-In.
