About Pipestone
Pipestone was platted in 1876 and takes its name from the county, which is named for the red stone Native peoples have quarried nearby for pipes for centuries. Pipestone National Monument sits just north of town, with a short trail to Winnewissa Falls. Downtown's old buildings are made of local Sioux quartzite, and visitors can walk the historic district with a free guide book. Neighbors now come together for the big Water Tower Festival each June, the county fair in August, and downtown fall nights like Trunk or Treat.
