About Montello
Montello began in 1849, when settlers made land claims by the Montello River and picked a name said to mean hill and water. A dam and sawmill came in 1850, and a few years later the town became the seat of Marquette County. From about 1880 the Montello Granite Company cut a hard, long-lasting granite here that went into Civil War monuments and the tombs of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife. Today the old quarry is a park with waterfalls, the Montello River meets the Fox River in town, with Buffalo Lake above the dam, and Wisconsin's tallest cottonwood tree stands here. Families come for the Fish N Fun Festival each May and the tree lighting at Daggett Memorial Park in December.
