About Pardeeville
Pardeeville sits near the start of the Upper Fox River, and it is named for John S. Pardee, a Milwaukee businessman who sent a man out in 1848 to build a store here. The river is dammed in the village to make Park Lake. Trains once stopped downtown, and the 1909 Bellmont Hotel next to the depot served their riders before it became the Columbia County museum. In 1910 Angie Williams Cox talked the newspaper editor into keeping a shelf of books in his print shop, and that shelf grew into the public library that still stands on Main Street. Every year families come to the Watermelon Festival for free watermelon and the U.S. Watermelon Speed-Eating and Seed-Spitting Championships.
