About Princeton
Princeton grew up on both banks of the Fox River, which still splits the city into an east half and a west half. It was once called Pleasant Valley and was part of Marquette County; a post office has run here since 1849, and the town took its name from Princeton, Massachusetts. It became a city in 1920, and from the late 1930s its Handcraft Co. made the knitted Muk Luks slipper socks that became a fashion hit. Today people come for the big Saturday flea market in City Park, the shops on historic Water Street, and birding by the river, where whooping cranes spend the summer nearby.
