About Northwood
Northwood was laid out in 1857 along a bend of the Shell Rock River and platted the next year, and it grew into the seat of Worth County, a county formed in 1851 and named for General William Jenkins Worth. When Kensett tried to take the county seat away in 1879, Northwood's people raised the money and gave the land for a brick Italianate courthouse that builder Simon Larsen finished in 1880; a larger Romanesque courthouse with a small tower replaced it in 1893, and the old one went on to serve as a high school, a library and youth center, and, since July 4, 1973, the Worth County Historical Society's main museum. Four blocks of Central Avenue, lined with one- to three-story Queen Anne and Italianate storefronts, the L.T. Dillon Clock, the Haugen Water Fountain and a stone stairway down to the river, joined the National Register as a historic district in 2006. Down by the river the historical society keeps a 1858 log house rebuilt in town in 1981, a creamery from about 1906 with a working print shop, and a red machinery museum full of plows and threshers. Today about 2,070 people live in Northwood, catching a weekend movie at the Northwood Theatre on Central Avenue, cheering on the Northwood-Kensett Vikings and greeting travelers at the Top of Iowa welcome center out by Interstate 35.
